At the Arizona School of Medical Massage & Wellness (ASMMW), we have now filled three cohorts, and enrollment is open for our next 700-Hour Hybrid Medical Massage & Wellness Program beginning November 17 in Peoria, Arizona.

More Than Learning How to Give a Massage

Massage therapy can be a rewarding career, but becoming an exceptional therapist requires more than memorizing a sequence of massage strokes.

Our students learn to think.

The ASMMW curriculum places a strong emphasis on anatomy, pathology, palpation, assessment, clinical reasoning and critical thinking. Students learn to ask questions such as:

• Why is this client experiencing pain?
• What tissues and structures may be involved?
• What information can we gather through the clinical interview, observation, palpation and assessment?
• Is massage appropriate for this client?
• What techniques make sense for this particular person?
• When should a massage therapist modify a session or refer the client to another healthcare professional?

We want our graduates to understand not only what to do with their hands, but why they are doing it.

A 700-Hour Hybrid Program Designed for Real Life

Going back to school can be difficult when you already have a job, family and other responsibilities.

Our hybrid program was designed differently.

Students complete a combination of online education and intensive in-person learning while attending campus just one day per week.

That concentrated schedule allows students to work toward a new career without having to be on campus four or five days every week.

The program is approximately nine months long and includes 700 hours of massage therapy education, combining foundational sciences, hands-on massage, clinical applications, specialized populations, business and professional development, and supervised student clinic experience.

Clinical Education Starts Before Graduation

One of the things that sets ASMMW apart is our emphasis on applying classroom knowledge to real people and real situations.

Students don’t simply learn anatomy for an exam and then forget it.

As the program progresses, anatomy, pathology, assessment and hands-on techniques come together through case studies, practical application and supervised clinical experiences.

Students learn to look beyond a client’s statement that “my shoulder hurts” or “my back is tight” and begin thinking critically about what may be contributing to that complaint.

That process helps bridge the gap between being a massage therapy student and becoming a thoughtful, confident professional.

Learning to Work With Different Populations

Massage therapists encounter far more than perfectly healthy adults looking for relaxation.

Our students are introduced to working appropriately with a variety of populations and circumstances, including pregnancy, pediatrics, older adults, people with disabilities, clients experiencing pain or injury, and individuals with medical considerations that may require adaptations or additional precautions.

Students also learn something equally important: recognizing when massage is appropriate, when a session needs to be modified and when massage may not be appropriate at all.

Making a Difference in Our Community

Community involvement is an important part of the culture at ASMMW.

Through student clinic experiences, volunteer opportunities and community partnerships, students have opportunities to see how therapeutic touch can serve people in many different stages of life.

We have worked to expand access and educational experiences involving populations that may not always have easy access to massage therapy, including pregnant women, school-aged children, older adults and people living with disabilities or neurological conditions.

These experiences do more than provide practice hours.

They help students develop communication skills, professionalism, empathy, adaptability and confidence working with real people whose needs may be very different from one another.

Learn From a School Connected to the Profession

Education should not stop at graduation.

ASMMW is also home to an active continuing education center that brings respected educators and organizations to Arizona for advanced professional training.

Our students are exposed to a larger professional community while they are still in school and can continue returning to ASMMW for continuing education long after graduation.

We want graduation to be the beginning of a massage therapist’s education, not the end of it.

From Student to Professional

Our curriculum also addresses the realities of building a career.

Students receive education in professionalism, ethics, communication, documentation, business and marketing, client management and career development, along with preparation for the MBLEx and the steps involved in becoming licensed.

The goal isn’t simply to finish 700 hours.

The goal is to graduate prepared to take the next step.
