Last week, something extraordinary happened in Phoenix.
The World Parkinson Congress brought together thousands of attendees from around the globe, including individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, caregivers, researchers, physicians, therapists, advocates, and healthcare professionals. As part of the event, the Arizona School of Medical Massage & Wellness (ASMMW) was honored to help organize and staff a Wellness Room offering massage therapy and other wellness services to Congress attendees.

What started as a volunteer service project quickly became one of the most meaningful experiences our students, graduates, instructors, and volunteers have ever participated in.
More Than Massage

Over the course of several days, our team provided hundreds of wellness sessions to people affected by Parkinson’s disease. Attendees shared stories of their challenges, triumphs, hopes, and daily struggles. Some had never experienced professional massage therapy before. Others told us they had been living with chronic pain, stiffness, anxiety, or stress and were grateful simply to have a place to relax and feel cared for.
Time and again, we witnessed the power of human touch.
We watched shoulders relax.
We saw smiles replace worry.
We heard laughter in places where there had been frustration.
Most importantly, we saw what happens when healthcare professionals choose to serve.
Specialized Training in Action
One of the most rewarding aspects of the World Parkinson Congress was watching our students and graduates put their specialized training into practice.
At Arizona School of Medical Massage & Wellness, we believe massage therapists should be prepared to work with a wide variety of populations, including those living with chronic neurological conditions. As part of that commitment, our students receive education related to Parkinson’s disease and many of our volunteers completed additional training through the Parkinson’s Ready Program before the event. This specialized preparation helped our team better understand the unique physical, emotional, and mobility challenges faced by People with Parkinson’s (PwP), allowing them to provide care with greater confidence, compassion, and professionalism.

Throughout the Congress, our students gained invaluable real-world experience working directly with attendees living with Parkinson’s disease. They observed firsthand how therapeutic touch can help reduce stress, ease muscular tension, promote relaxation, and improve overall well-being. While massage therapy is not a treatment for Parkinson’s disease, many attendees reported feeling more relaxed, less stiff, more mobile, and in better spirits following their sessions.
Research suggests that massage may support the release of neurotransmitters associated with relaxation, pleasure, and emotional well-being, including dopamine. Because Parkinson’s disease involves a loss of dopamine-producing neurons, many attendees appreciated not only the physical benefits of massage but also the emotional lift, comfort, and human connection it provided. For some, it was the first opportunity during the busy Congress to simply relax, breathe, and focus on themselves.
We also witnessed several remarkable moments that highlighted the diversity of skills within our volunteer team. One attendee arrived with a dedicated service dog that had spent long hours assisting its handler throughout the conference. One of our volunteers, who holds advanced certification in canine massage therapy, was able to provide therapeutic bodywork to the service animal. This was not simply petting a dog; it was professional therapeutic care for a hardworking partner whose job is to care for someone else every day.

Another highlight of the Congress was watching the massage therapy community come together for a common cause. Licensed massage therapists, massage therapy students, instructors, graduates, and even volunteers from another massage school worked side-by-side throughout the event. There was no competition, no concern about where someone went to school or where they worked. Everyone united around a shared goal: serving the Parkinson’s community. It was a powerful reminder that when healthcare professionals collaborate rather than compete, the people we serve benefit the most.

Experiences like these reinforce what we teach at ASMMW: massage therapy is about far more than learning strokes and routines. It is about critical thinking, adapting to individual needs, serving diverse populations, and using skilled touch to improve quality of life. These are the moments that transform students into healthcare professionals and demonstrate the profound impact massage therapy can have on individuals, families, and communities.
Teaching Students to Make a Difference
At ASMMW, we believe massage therapy is about far more than learning techniques.
Anyone can memorize a routine.
What truly matters is learning how to connect with people, solve problems, think critically, and use your skills to improve someone’s quality of life.
That philosophy is woven into everything we teach.
Our students learn anatomy, pathology, assessment skills, and evidence-informed clinical reasoning. They also learn compassion, professionalism, communication, and service to others.
Events like the World Parkinson Congress allow students and graduates to see firsthand how massage therapy can positively impact special populations and underserved communities.
It reminds us that massage therapists are not simply service providers. They are caregivers, educators, advocates, and members of a larger healthcare team.
A Culture of Community Service
One of the things that makes the Arizona School of Medical Massage & Wellness different is our commitment to giving back.
Our students regularly participate in community service projects, volunteer events, student clinics, and outreach opportunities that allow them to apply their skills while helping others.
Whether serving individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, supporting special populations, working with seniors, assisting people recovering from surgery, or helping those living with chronic pain, our mission extends beyond the classroom walls.
We believe the best massage therapists are those who understand that their hands can change lives.
That culture starts with leadership and is passed on to every student who walks through our doors.
Lessons Learned and Lives Changed
Like any large-scale healthcare event, there were challenges, adjustments, and opportunities to learn and improve. Yet what stood out most was the incredible teamwork displayed by volunteers, students, instructors, and community partners.
By the final day, the Wellness Room was operating like a well-oiled machine, serving attendees efficiently while maintaining the compassion and personal connection that made the experience so special.
The lessons learned will help us continue growing, improving, and creating even greater opportunities for our students in the future.
