Description:
Being a massage therapist requires striking a balance between providing compassionate care for our clients, while also understanding how to honor our own needs so our work does not consume us.
When caring for our clients, our personal needs (many of which have never been adequately met since childhood) can be called into question. And sometimes by the time this reaches our awareness, unhealthy patterns have been established. At this point, we may feel overwhelmed, under-valued, depressed, angry, and in a word, stressed. The clinical word for it is burnout.
The truth is every client affects each of us in nine different ways.
The Enneagram is our “user guide.” This nine-pointed ancient wisdom map provides us with insight into our personality helping us understand not only our unique needs, but how we go about getting those needs met. The Enneagram teaches us self-compassion, which in turn, makes us more compassionate professionals.
Through the Stress lines in the map, the Enneagram shows us what might happen when we don’t get our needs met. Without understanding this essential part of our nature (our woundedness), we cannot provide care that fully honors our clients. While we seek to give as compassionate and highly trained professionals, we cannot give from an empty cup.
The Enneagram map also shows us where and how we can become more empowered caregivers, though what is called the Security line. This is natural access we have in the personality that helps us attain our goals in healthy ways.
We will examine all of these concepts in this class.
